Some Quick Facts about Drill Bits

What is a drill bit?

Drill bit is a special kind of cutting tool, which is specially designed to fit into a rotating drill. It comes along-with a bit and is used to cut cylindrical holes of various sizes in various kinds of surfaces. The terminologies, such as drill bit and drill are quite often confused, as these terms are used to define the cutter as well as the cutter holder.

Wikipedia Definition

“Drill bits are cutting tools used to create cylindrical holes, almost always of circular cross-section. Bits are held in a tool called a drill, which rotates them and provides torque and axial force to create the hole. Specialized bits are also available for non-cylindrical-shaped holes.”

The wooden bits are usually of three types: dowel, flat and auger. While a flat bit is sharper, so as to get through the wooden surface; the dowel type features cutting spurs and is thus known as spur bit or lip. This type of bit is ideal for making holes in wooden dowels as it always gives a smooth finish; the last one, the auger bit features a rather corkscrew shape and is twisted with a wide cutting edge. It also delivers smooth finish and ideally cuts on wood.

Some quick facts about drill bits

  1. Standard Point: This particular feature is considered for common calculation process. It helps in drilling mild/soft surfaces such as aluminium, cold rolled steel, wood etc. Typically, this kind of bit is made up of High Speed Steel (HSS) and is also available with Titanium Nitride coating. It can be easily sharpened with a 250 Handyman.
  2. Split Point: This kind of bit features an additional set of cutting lips along the chisel edge of the piece. It can be carbide, cobalt or HSS and can be easily sharpened with 250 Handyman. However, such kind of fastener works best, provided split-point is present.
  3. Masonry Point: Such type of bit also goes well with a 250 handyman and sharpens the surface through its curve-shaped grind.
Most of these drill bits for domestic use feature straight shanks. For heavy duty drilling in industry, these cutting tools feature tapered shanks.
